Figure 7.A.6. Dideoxy sequencing. Step 6: Load the single-stranded DNA onto a gel and perform electrophoresis. This is a special type of electrophoresis that it can distinguish between DNA sequences that differ by only a single nucleotide. The figure shows the DNA strands after the electrophoresis is done. (New sequencing machines load the DNA into a capillary tube--a very long cylinder with a very small diameter--instead of onto a gel, but with the same consequences--the spearation of DNA strands by size.)
