A regulatory protein (red figure) binds to the DNA close to a promoter region (a section of DNA where transcription enzymes bind to intitate the process of transcription). The presence of the regulatory protein prevents the transcription enzymes from binding with the DNA. Hence, the proteins coded for by the genes downstream from this area are not made.
