Post Installation Procedures
Once your workstation has had HP-UX installed on its attached hard drives,
several steps must be taken to insure that the workstation has full
functionality on the IU network and the larger Internet. The installation
relies on a GUI program to collect this information, called set_parms.
The command will be run automatically, however if this information
should ever need to be updated, here are the options for set_parms
/sbin/set_parms hostname
This will allow you to change the system name, but it's only
recommended soon after initial system installation and before
loading and configuring optional software.
/sbin/set_parms timezone
Provides an interactive interface to change the time zone that
the system believes it's in.
/sbin/set_parms date_time
Provides an interactive interface to set the date and time.
/sbin/set_parms ip_address
Allows you to set or change your IP address. Please use with
caution if changing your IP address.
/sbin/set_parms addl_netwrk
Allows you to set up the use of network gateways, the Domain Name
System (DNS), and the Network Information Service (NIS).
/sbin/set_parms font_c-s
Allows you to make your system an X11 font server or an X11
font client (to access a font server). Becoming a font client
will allow you to reclaim disk space normally used for X11 fonts.
When prompted by the post-installation setup program, indicate that
you have connected the system to a network, and specify the
- Hostname
- Timezone (set system time if necessary)
- Root password
- Internet address
- Subnet mask
- Gateway Host Name
- Gateway IP Address
- Local Domain Name
- DNS Server Host Name
- DNS Server IP address
- Indicate that Network Information Service (NIS) will not be used.
- Indicate that the X11 font server will not be used.
Installing Unbundled Software
The command swinstall is used to install HP-UX packages
that do not come with the Base Operating system. To access these
packages you will need a Code Word from the HP Support. This code
word is usually sent with the Application CD-ROMS. Alternatively
a software depot, or repository, may be specified. In this case,
all the currently licensed software is listed and available for
downloading and installation.
