Exactly. SGI IRIX uses winterm windows. HP-UX uses hpterm windows and Solaris' Common Desktop Environment uses Terminal windows. If a user sitting at an SGI logins in to an HP, the SGI doesn't know anything about hpterm windows. The xterm program can be thought of as a common window language that workstations from different vendors can all speak.
