SunOS 5.X Boot and Installation

Sun Microsystem's operating system is called SunOS. With the release of version 5.0 of SunOS, the product was distributed as with the name of Solaris (version 2). This was to denote that the distribution included more than an operating system but an operating environment.

This distinction is also made because SunOS version's 4.x and below are based upon Berkeley Unix and SunOS version 5.X and above are based upon SVR5. Today most people refer to Solaris when they are referring to SunOS 5.X and SunOS for versions 4.X and below.

• SunOS 5.4 = Solaris 2.4
• SunOS 5.5 = Solaris 2.5
