Peripherals under Linux

The process of installing floppy, tape, and CD-ROM drives under Linux is more involved than installing removable media under IRIX, HP-UX, or Solaris. The process varies not only with whether the drive is CD-ROM, tape, or floppy, but also with the brand. Before any of this media is installed the Linux Hardware Compatibility HOWTO should be consulted to determine whether or not the hardware is supported.

The installation of QIC tape drives requires ftape software. ftape is a driver program. Information on ftape and QIC drives is available from the ftape-HOWTO. ftape is not needed for SCSI tape drives as they are supported by the kernel through SCSI drivers. Because of the hardware on which Linux runs, floppy drives are often an internal part of the system. Information on installing SCSI floppy drives, as well as other SCSI devices is available from the SCSI-HOWTO.

Information on CD-ROM drives under Linux can be found in the The Linux CD-ROM HOWTO.
