Talking Serially: Terminal Configuration in IRIX

Typical terminal entries in IRIX inittab files look like this:

t2:23:respawn:/etc/getty -console -N ttyd2 co_9600

In the process field, the arguments to getty are as follows:

• The -console option tells getty that the shell generated from a login is a system console and should receive system error messages. It is optional.
• The -N option tells getty to disallow logins when the file /etc/nologin exists. It is optional.
• ttyd2 is the port to monitor.
• co_9600 specifies which port configuration to use from the gettydefs file.

After modifying the inittab, issue the command telinit q to activate it.

/etc/ttytype and /etc/gettydefs

By default, the IRIX ttytype file has question marks before many of the entries, such as this:

?vt100  ttyd1

The question mark causes tset to prompt the user logging in on that port for their terminal type, offering the given terminal type as the default.
