Research Projects.

In 2002 the Johnson Laboratory purchased a Union Biometrica COPAS worm sorter  to facilitate handling and sorting of the large numbers of worms required for population studies. This instrument represents one of only a few in public institutions in the USA. Techniques that are also employed for our demographic studies include: classical worm genetics, RNAi, statistical mathematics (Dr. Deqing Wu is our project Demographer) and molecular biology. We have several projects underway and these can be summarized as follows.

bullet

Revelation of  Hidden Heterogeneity to Predict Lifespan (Major aspects of this work were published in August, 2005 in Nature Genet.).

bullet

Demographics of Long-lived Genetic Mutants.

bullet

Changes in Mortality Following Interventions that Alter Lifespan (manuscript in preparation).

Dr. Jim Cypser joined our team in the middle of June, 2005. He has now taken leadership of the Demography project as I move consolidate my research interests in mitochondria. I hope to be in a position to start my own, independent research group within the next 12-24 months. (Faculty search committees, or companies sharing interests with my own, should contact me).
