Peripherals under Solaris
The steps for installing a floppy, tape or CD-ROM under
Solaris are:
- In the root directory create a file called reconfigure.
This tells the software to check for any new peripheral devices when
it is powered on or booted.
- Shut down the system.
- Turn off the power after the ok or >>
prompt. Turn off any peripherals also.
- Install the new device.
- Power up the system, including all peripherals.
If the installing the device required adding a new driver, the
add_drv command will need
to be run to alert the system that a driver has been added.
When adding a third party tape drive the st driver
may need to be called.
Solaris uses a layer of software called Volume Management to manage
CD-ROM and disk drives. Volume Management automatically mounts CD-ROMs and
floppy disks that have filesystems on them. Under Wabi or SunPC, interfaces
specific to those products must be used to access CD-ROMs or floppy disks.
