CAP FAD NUMBERS

FAD numbers are assigned to each individual in the CAP project. The numbers are 5 digits and are used to identify each individual by Family Identification Number, sex, birth order, and adopted or control status. The following table shows the correct number assignments.

For any FADNUM XXXXX

COLUMN DESCRIPTION SOURCE
1-3 Family Identification Number Assigned at Entry. For each 3 digit number there are 2 families, an adopted group and a control group. These numbers begin at 001 and go through 907, although there are no numbers in the 800s. There are also several bfad numbers which begin at 950. These were assigned to siblings who were adopted into already participating families. Individuals with 950+ numbers have 2 FADNUMs. One that relates to the original family number and a separate 950+ number (or BFADNUM) that identifies them as proband status participants.
4 SEX and Position

1 = Father
2= Mother
3 = Male Proband
4 = Female Proband
5,7,9 = Male Siblings (Can be older or younger than proband)
6,8,0 = Female Sibilings (Can be older or younger than proband)

5 Family Type and Relationship (Parent  generation)

1 = Birth Parents
2 = Adopting Parents
3 = Control
4 = Step, adoptive
5 = Step, control
6 = "Other Custodial", adoptive
7 = "Other Custodial", control

5 Family Type and Relationship (child generation)

1 = Proband (relinquished birth child in adopting family)
2 = Biological child in adoptive family
3 = Proband and full siblings in control family
4 = Half sibling, paternal, adoptive family
5 = Half sib, paternal, control family
6 = Half sib, maternal, adoptive family
7 = Half sib, maternal, control family
8 = Sibling adopted into adoptive family
9 = Sibling adopted into control family
